Movies I have seen lately or that are worth mentioning:
09-01-2008 Persepolis - This movie tells the same story as Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi but from the perspective of a little girl in Iran then a young teen. The format is black and white cartoon, which lets us identify with the characters with out the distraction of race.
09-24-2006 The Illusionist - The most striking aspect of The Illusionist has to be the actors chosen. Edward Norton, of course is one of my favorite actors, takes the leading role of a Vienna magician named Eisenheim. But as if it weren't enough to cast Edward Norton as the leading role, they gave the second leading role to none other than our favorite wine taster from Sideways Paul Giamatti. Paul Giamatti plays the Chief Inspector, a complicated man who is torn between political power and doing whats right. That would be enough for most movies, but then they couldn't stop there. They cast the lead character from Dark City Rufus Sewell as the Crown Prince Leopold. Now that makes three leading who have the three leading parts in this movie. Its just great. Go see it. I won't say anymore.
09-15-2006 The Black Dahlia - "They chose love over passion." If only the rest of the characters had done the same the terrible murder of a young woman in LA in the 1940's wouldn't have happened. This story is very complex and so are the characters. This thrilling mystery will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat.
09-08-2006 Little Miss Sunshine - Misery teaches you the important thing in life, namely that life is misery. Thats the moral of Little Miss Sunshine. In order to teach you this moral you are shown lots of examples. We all have expectations of how life should be. The Hoover family has all kinds of people in it. Richard, the father, has a Nine Step plan for success which he keeps failing to make money off of. The contrast between Richard and Frank, the depressed suicidal gay Proust scholar uncle, makes for an interesting contrast. While Richard is busy trying to teach his daugher that she can't lose if she wants to win bad enough, Uncle Frank is trying to explain why life is one endless misery. This movie will challenge you to think about what really makes life worth living, for me the answer was family.
05-27-2006 Mission: Impossible III -Mission: Impossible III by far beat the other two for best of the franchise. Tom looks so young in this movie. I wish I knew how he did it.
03-20-2006 V for Vendetta - Not since the Matrix has a movie left me so Exhilarated! Placed in the future after America's downfall, England is ruled with an iron fisted big-brother-isc government. Evey is locked into a conspiracy to set the world right again. Every minute is beautiful and wonderful. My favorite of the year so far.
01-15-2006 Munich -Violence, Gore, Blood fill this movie and might prevent you from seeing the underlying message: Violence is not the answer. Munich powerfully moved me, especially the last scene.
01-08-2005 Dogville - I often say that a movie I have seen is bazzar or very strange, but this movie takes the Cake. Its competely different than anything I have seen before for two reasons: One, The sets are different. I never quite got used to them either, but they give the viewer the feeling of a small town in a way that couldn't have been expressed if they had been convential. Second, as my husband said, its very disturbing. Dogville is about Grace who hides out in the small town from gangsters. The people of Dogville are real. I have never seen a movie so truly portray people. See it.
01-07-2005 Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence - First, Innocence is utter beautiful. The artists live up to the first Ghost in the Shell, then superceed it by far. Second, the writers deliver an intriguing plot showing maturity of the concepts introduced in the orginal. I so completely enjoyed this movie, and I am sure I'll watch it a few more times before I fully grasp all the amazing things crammed in.
10-15-2004 Shaun of the Dead - Imagine this, you are watching a British comedy about a guy who is having some problems keeping his girlfriend. He promises to change and become more interesting by taking her out for dinner instead of going to the pub every night. Got that set in your mind? Ok good, now drop in some Zommbies. This movie is so much fun. You'll love it from begining to end.
12-02-2004 Persona - A very intense movie about an actress and her nurse.
04-23-2004 La Battaglia di Algeri (The Battle of Algeria) - A movie about the revolution in Algria to rid them of the French rule. Filmed in 1965, the focus is on the intial start of the revolution with a few people and the way the two sides interacted and the escalation of violence. We get a look at the methods the two sides and the mistakes, failures, and the successes each side makes. There are no good guys or bad guys in this movie. It's hard to believe that these are actors portraying characters.
04-16-2004 The American Astronaut - The American Astronaut made me laugh and laugh, which is a change from most of the movies I have seen lately. This ridiculous movie is about a space pirate who goes on a crazy mission to become wealthy. He starts off by going to a bar on Ceres where after he wins a dance contest, recieves A Real Live Girl! which he takes to Jupiter to trade for a boy who saw a Womans Breast which then he takes to Venus to trade for the body of another guy so that he can bring the body to Earth to get a lot of money. There is singing, dancing, a birthday killer, amazing non-special effects, a teenage boy in a Greek God costume, and a bunch of other crazy things which make this movie one you must see right now!
04-02-2004 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Would you erase someone from your life? Thats the question that is asked in the movie staring Jim Carry and Kate Winslet. This movie is really about living with someone. Is putting up with all the little things they do that annoy you worth having someone to love and know you? We get an intimate look at this couple as they deal with eachother personalities. We identify with them, and laugh with them, and cry with them. This is one of the most believable movies about a relationship I have seen. In comparison with Adaptation, its a very normal movie in the way it was layed out. A question that wasn't addressed, but would have been intersting was, would you lose part of who you are if you erased someone from your mind?
02-28-2004 The Passion of the Christ
When I came out of this movie I had one question: Why did Jesus let this happen to him? Why would he allow himself to be beaten beyond recognition? Why would the Son of God let himself be put thru that much pain? He who was blameless, who loved the prostitute, who ate with tax collectors, who loved his enemies and blessed those who cursed him and taught others to do the same, who truly loved us, he who didn't think that equality with God was something to be grasped was executed in the most cruel way? Why?!?! I truly hated those Roman guards, but then I recalled this:
Isaiah 53
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
It was our Sin that he was dieing for. It was us who put him on the cross. I pray that each of us will repent of our sins and turn to God and trust in Jesus's perfect sacrifice. We serve a living Lord. Jesus was victorious over Sin and Death
Hebrews 2
14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
I recommend this movie for its historic accuracy of the most important event in human history since Eve ate the fruit in the garden of Eden.
02-27-2004 Les Triplettes de Belleville - This beautiful cartoon is very funny and a delight to watch. With almost no dialog and using music to move the story ahead, we watch the story of a strange short woman and her nephew. The boy grows up and is caught up into a insidious plot which the aunt must rescue him from. Along the way we get to listen to lots of music made with unlikely instruments. The people in this world are of all sizes and shapes. Its really quite something. The only disapointment was how short it was. I was hoping the fun would continue. Go see it!
02-06-2004 City of God - Shows what it is like to live in the slums in Rio de Janeiro: horrific, desperate, brutal. I cried for several hours afterwards. Very distrubing but important to watch if you can handle seeing children murder each other.
01-25-2004 Girl with a Pearl Earring - Living as a maid with the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer, a young woman learns about life. Set in the 17th centry Netherlands, this movie shows that though life was very different it was still the same. There is a wamth to the story but a coldness lies underneath. In the end you are left with questions about who Griet is which just brings up the whole discussion of image. What is under the image? What is beyond the paint? We never find out. Is that how it should be? Is the medium of paint too weak to show us real character? I left the movie not knowing anymore about the girl whose painting hangs in my dining room than when I went in. Fascinating for all you who are interested in history, the Dutch, or both.
01-09-2004 21 Grams - A brutal look at three lives which intersect in a terrifying way. I still think about this movie even a month later. The situations could happen to anyone and you have to think about what you would do. I realized what it would feel like to loose so much. What do you live for when you loose what you lived for? Watch this for the amazing acting and think about it. There is no easy answer to the question, "What would you have done?"
01-16-2004The Cooler - Bernie (William H. Macy) whose luck is so bad his job is "cool" off hot tables in casino's. Macy is wonderful as a guy with no self-esteem who meets a girl who changes his luck. Shelley (Alec Baldwin), Bernie's boss at a casino, is a complicated character trying to hold on to the old "pure" Las Vegas. This is the best acting I have seen from Alec and he gives just one of the brutally realistic proformances seen in this movie.
Waking Life - animated philosophy, very thought provoking,
Kikujiro-histerical Japanese movie, laughed so hard it hurt.
All About My Mother-Spanish Movie about Very Odd people,
Vertical Ray of the Sun - odd movie Vietnamese about people who have some problems.
The Man who wasn't there-Black And White movie about a really boring guy who wasn't there,
Vatel - The story of a steward who was far more noble than the noble men he worked for,
Equilibrium - A move based on F-451,
Adaptation - Hysterical look at hollywood and people in general,
Being There - a really weird movie a guy who lives his life in tv,
Death to Smoochy - A dark comedy about the kids tv show industry. Ed Norton is a genius.
Following - A movie from Christopher Nolan ( the same director who did Momento). It is an eery film about a writer who follows people for material. At first the movie doesn't seem to have a plot, but slowly one develops and it is really wild.
