Speaking for Impact: How to connect with any audience by Shirley E. Nice

Ever have a really important message to get across to a tough audience? This book will help you convey your message in a meaningful way by tapping into your own personal strengths. In Speaking for Impact, Shirley Nice teaches us that in order to make an impact on our audience we must first know ourselves very well. We must know what our passion is. Our passion is the fuel. If we don’t speak about things near our passion we will come across dry and put our audiences to sleep.

We must know what parts of ourselves we don’t want to convey to the audience. These parts of us our things like our nervousness, that we don’t like this subject. The more things we are trying to hide, the less we can connect with our audience.

Our blinders are the parts of us we don’t even know about, such as fiddling with our ring during a speech. The more blinders we have, the less our message will get thru to the audience.

If we don’t know ourselves very well, we will not be able to connect with our audience.

She goes on to the second necessity for speaking with impact: Know the different kinds of audiences: concrete or abstract, action or reflection. We need to put content for each type of audience member in order to impact each one. Each requires not only a different kind of content, but different types of styles. Mix it up in order to keep them all happy.

Throughout the book she gives vivid explanations and examples to keep the text fun and fresh. I haven’t enjoyed reading a non-fiction book so much in a while. I’ve been putting her concrete methods into practice already with great success: my audience a few weeks ago said that I gave my best speech ever after they heard a speech using these methods!
