Too Old

When I was a child I thought living near a stream would be nice,

But now that I am grown up I can’t afford the flood insurance.

When I was a child I thought that 30 was ancient,

But now that I am grown up, I think that 90 is not that old.

When I was a child I thought playing in the rain was a delight,

But now that I am grown up I don’t want to be cold and wet.

When I was a child I thought having a dog would be fun,

But now that I am grown up, I don’t have the energy.

When I was a child I thought it would be nice to live alone on a Tropical Island,

But now that I am grown up, I am afraid of global warming raising the sea level.

When I was a child I thought having a bird would be enjoyable,

But now that I am grown up, I can’t stand the noise.

When I was a child I thought singing in the streets is entertaining,

But now that I am grown up, I worry about what people would think of me.

When I was a child I though that being a professional artist would be a good career,

But now that I am grown up I’d rather have a steady income.

When I was a child I thought marriage was happily ever after,

But now that I am grown up, I realize is just ever after.

When I was a child I thought that I’d be nice to kids when I grow up,

But now that I am grown up, all kids seem like punks.
